Setting a new standard for city leadership

The City Leaders Program (CLP) — the inaugural offering of the Global Mayors Academy — is a transformational, practice-oriented leadership program for mayors, urban innovators, and other city leaders who are ready to move from managing challenges to intentionally shaping the future.

It enables leaders to earn meaningful global recognition, credible standing, and the influence needed to shape important conversations, deepen leadership capacity, and craft integrated, actionable strategies for the sustainable and regenerative transformation of their cities.

Guided by exceptional teachers, world-class experts, and successful mayors, and supported by a global peer community of city leaders, participants engage in real-world projects, shared learning, and collective innovation — building the mindset, confidence, and practical tools needed to lead wisely in a complex and rapidly changing world.

Cities around the world are facing mounting pressures - from rising living costs, growing inequality, and strained social cohesion, to rapid population shifts, climate migration, overstretched infrastructure, declining public trust, and accelerating technological change.

These deeply interconnected disruptions are stretching local systems and demanding investment in future-ready skills, next-generation infrastructure that is circular, zero-emission, and fit for purpose - and a dynamic form of leadership that is inclusive, accountable, responsive, and grounded in integrity.

The City Leaders Program helps city leaders like you respond to these realities - not by offering one-size-fits-all solutions, but by supporting you to realise the outcomes that matter most to your context and calling. Whether it's building trusted influence, unlocking critical funding, activating your citizens as partners, or designing future-ready strategies, CLP equips you to move from firefighting to future-shaping.

Through an integrated, practice-based journey rooted in applied learning, real-world projects, and a trusted global community, city leaders expand their capacity to lead with wisdom, courage, and deep collaboration — across their own personal development, their teams, their city, and the systems that sustain life within it.

Who we built this program for
The City Leaders Program is for people who carry responsibility - not as a title, but as a commitment to the place and the people within it. People who feel the pressure, and stay with what matters.

You might be shaping a city, town, island, or community - anywhere people come together to live, work, and build meaningful lives. If you hold any leadership capacity, and you want change that holds up in lived experience, this Program helps you deepen your leadership and widen your impact.

That is why, our program was created for:

  • Mayors and their teams
  • City council members
  • Senior municipal officials and advisors
  • Urban planners, developers, and infrastructure innovators
  • Sustainability, resilience, and digital city strategists
  • Ecosystem builders convening cross-sector partnerships
  • Civic, NGO, and community leaders driving local change
  • Emerging civic leaders and city-makers under 30

Whether you join as an individual or as part of a city leadership team, if you want to lead more effectively in the midst of complexity — making decisions that that work for you, your community and city — you’re exactly the sort of person we designed this Program for.

The CLP curriculum

The City Leaders Program runs from April to October. It’s built to help you lead well in real conditions — pressure, trade-offs, and competing priorities — while staying connected to what matters in your place and to your people.

Across six core modules, you build a shared foundation (how cities work, what good leadership looks like in complexity, and how change actually lands). Alongside each core module you choose two elective sessions from a curated set, so you can go deeper in the areas that fit your role, your context, and what you most need next. Your choices are supported by a simple reflective loop, so the learning stays relevant rather than generic.
Real-world application: WowYourCity! projects

Lead 1 or more real-world projects that create visible impact in your city—while you learn.

Choose from 6 powerful project options during Orientation, get step-by-step frameworks, global peer support, and expert guidance all the way.

You’re encouraged to invite your city teams and colleagues to join you in the project work.

This part of the journey is designed to include them—and help build their skills too.

Attend an in-person networking & learning experience in either Switzerland or South Africa
Our program concludes with a transformative 5-day, in-person immersive experience, hosted across culturally rich destinations in both Switzerland and the Western Cape Province of South Africa.

These twin gatherings honour — and hold space for — a learning experience that is alive with the cultural diversity and deep wisdom of both the Global North and South. They provide natural spaces for reflection, celebration, and expansion — where consciousness can grow, wisdom can be shared, and lessons can be learned through the land itself. Students engage in peer learning, explore place-based innovation, connect with transformative local initiatives, and experience the beauty of breathtaking natural surroundings.

Each of these journeys will culminate in a graduation — but in reality, the entire experience is a living classroom.

In Switzerland, we’ll begin in Geneva, travel through Yvoire, Lausanne, Bern, Zurich, and complete our journey in the ancient town of Liechtensteig.

In the Western Cape Province of South Africa, we’ll start in Cape Town, move along the west coast to the town of Paternoster, then travel through the winelands to towns like, Tulbagh, the Nuy Valley, and McGregor, before returning to Cape Town to close the journey.

As we grow, we hope this arc will one day extend to be hosted in other regions of the world — so we may celebrate the depth of diversity from North, South, East, and West because we are citizens of one, big, beautiful blue planet—EARTH!

Note on Costs
  • The current estimated cost of each immersive journey is £1 500, covering on-the-ground expenses.
  • This does not include your travel to and from the destination.
  • The fee is subject to change depending on global conditions and actual costs at the time.
Early Bird Bonus:
If you register before 28 February 2026 and have paid the full course fee, your on-the-ground costs for one of the immersives will be included in your tuition fee.
